Phnom Penh

One of my favourite cities! Why?

It’s dirty, poor, has an awful history from not that long ago aka: Pol Pot and the Khmer rouge but has that feeling of adventure and off the tourist route that is getting harder to find. Sitting by the riverside with a beer watching the passing traffic and the Khmer workers on their way home crammed in trucks and 4 deep on a motorcycle is a dream come true. The fabulous food markets with the women cutting the heads of frogs and just killed beef still quivering out on a table with no refrigeration is a sight us westerners simply can’t believe. My first stop is always the bird lady where you can buy a bird for one dollar to simply let it go! To set it free! For some reason a spiritual act which relaxes the soul. The killing fields and S21 are close by but that is the past and the locals are getting on with life now days. Watching from the foreign correspondent club to the streets below is like watching a movie and at night the fishing boats lights are everywhere hoping to earn a meager living from the mighty Mekong river.

It definitely has it’s scary side so don’t wonder off on your own but I guess that applies in many places now days
